About

The Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society (AIRS) is a Shenzhen municipal basic-research institute established in 2019 by the Shenzhen municipal government and hosted by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen), working with a group of leading international research institutions. AIRS focuses on fundamental and original research in artificial intelligence and robotics, covering five research centers - Medical Robotics, Micro/Nano Robotics, Robotic Systems, Embodied Intelligence, and Swarm Intelligence - and organizes its work along three directions: multi-scale intraluminal interventional surgical robots for human health, heterogeneous multi-robot collaboration for urban services, and AI-driven smart low-carbon systems for sustainable development. The institute translates results into healthcare and rehabilitation, smart manufacturing, urban service and sustainability applications, runs open-call research programs (including a 2026 medical-robotics open-topic program), hosts the Shenzhen Smart Robot Dexterous Hand Competition and the AIRS international conference on AI and robotics, and provides talent programs through AIRS Academy. Its leadership includes President Xu Yangsheng and Executive Vice President Ding Ning, and its research outputs have been published in Science Robotics, Science Advances, Nature Biomedical Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Robotics and MICRO/ICCD/CoRL, including cable-climbing bridge-inspection robots, bronchoscopy robots and magnetic micro/nano robot swarms.
