Tokyo Robotics Inc. is a Japanese robotics company headquartered in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, founded in January 2015 with capital of JPY 100,000,000, and since 2025-07-01 a wholly owned subsidiary of Yaskawa Electric Corporation. Its president and founder is Yoshihiro Sakamoto, who holds a Ph.D. from Waseda University on indoor positioning using GPS-compatible signals, with Hiroaki Arie as CTO and Prof. Shigeki Sugano of Waseda University as technical adviser. The company's stated mission is to create a world in which robots take on repetitive and hazardous work while humans focus on work that requires mind and heart, and it develops and sells robots and AI, aiming ultimately at general-purpose robots that can perform a variety of tasks across markets. Its signature product is Torobo, a humanoid robot for manufacturing, logistics and service applications that uses high-performance torque sensing and impedance control throughout its body, with 7-axis dual arms, a 3-axis waist, a 3-axis neck and a 4-axis omni-directional mobile base, an optional sensor head and an optional in-house gripper or multi-fingered hand. The wider line-up includes Torobo Hand, Torobo Puppet (a puppet-type teleoperation device) and Legacy Products. Torobo is offered as a ROS-based research and automation platform with models published for MuJoCo and NVIDIA Isaac Sim, and the company open-sourced the new Torobo and Torobo Hand simulation models in October 2024.
