| Computing Platform | A custom control system built by Walt Disney Imagineering rather than an off-the-shelf robot controller. The software uses real-time, model-based collision detection to prevent any commanded motion from causing damage, which is what allows a figure with 81 degrees of freedom to move fluidly in a confined show space. The mechanical design is unusually dense: the figure contains about 9,000 parts and 3,500 screws, its skeletal body is mostly aluminium, and it is finished in custom silicone skin. Motion comes from DC motors, many of them frameless and custom built. The head alone carries 42 degrees of freedom so the face can produce a wide range of expressions, and the arms run to 9 degrees of freedom each with independent shoulder movement, letting the figure animate its shoulders and scapula rather than moving as a rigid mannequin. The result performs for about 16 hours a day, 365 days a year, with very limited breaks. | Real-time mid-air pose control |
| Sensors | Rotary encoders for absolute positioning, which give the control system authoritative knowledge of every joint's position; the figure is also described as having vision among its capabilities. | Inertial measurement and flight-control sensors |
