Donut Robotics Co., Ltd. is a Japanese robot venture founded in 2014 in a garage in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and incorporated on 2016-01-04. Its stated mission is to solve social problems with robots, and its current positioning is built on "donut AI": the company says it powers robots worldwide with its own AI while also building its own original hardware, including an all-Japan-made humanoid. It first drew attention with the Cinnamon communication robot, which carries face recognition and communication technology and was selected in 2017 for the Haneda Airport Robot Project, with pilots launched alongside Hitachi Systems, Mitsui Fudosan, NEC and NTT. The company was featured in the New York Times in 2020, exhibited at CES in 2022 and won an "EY innovative startup" award in 2024. Its current humanoid, Cinnamon 1, is presented as the world's first mass-produced bipedal humanoid equipped with gesture control, described on the official product page as a mass-produced humanoid roughly 170 cm tall and roughly 70 kg, combining a vision-language model that understands images and language with the company's own work on a vision-language-action system; it is initially aimed at construction sites and factories and the company says it has already been introduced to major companies. The line-up also includes Cinnamon Guide, a customer-service robot with patrol-based shoplifting prevention, customer service, world-class translation and sales-representative functions, sold at JPY 2.2 million including tax or from JPY 62,000 per month, and the original Cinnamon communication robot installed at airports and welfare facilities. Cinnamon 1 currently uses an overseas OEM body running Donut's AI, with the company stating its aim of making both the hardware and software entirely in Japan. Founder and CEO is Taisuke Ono.
