Generative Bionics S.r.l. is an Italian humanoid robotics company founded in July 2024 as a spin-off of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Genoa, and it describes itself as the first intelligent humanoid robotics start-up that is 'made in Italy'. It was created on the initiative of four IIT researchers — Daniele Pucci (CEO), Alessio Del Bue (Chief AI Officer), Marco Maggiali (CTO) and Andrea Pagnin (Chief Business Officer) — with Davide Rota as Executive Chairman and Jeffrey Libshutz; IIT granted the company an exclusive licence to core technologies developed in Italy, including work carried out with INAIL in the area of Physical AI. The company builds on more than twenty years of humanoid research at IIT, the lineage of which includes iCub (2009), for over a decade the world's most widely used humanoid research platform, ergoCub, funded by INAIL to bring robots into workplaces, and iRonCub. In December 2025 Generative Bionics closed a EUR 70 million round led by the Artificial Intelligence Fund of CDP Venture Capital with AMD Ventures, Duferco, Eni Next, RoboIT and Tether — reported as one of the largest deep-tech rounds in Europe and the largest seed round ever recorded in Italy. Around 70 IIT engineers moved into the company, which began operating officially on 2026-01-07 with 70 people and has since grown to roughly 100 employees, 40% of them PhDs. Its central technology is GENE.01, a humanoid platform that is modular in both hardware and software and that the company describes as defining its 'genetics of Physical AI'; from that engineering base it plans robots for three verticals — inspection and public safety, logistics, and healthcare and pharmaceuticals — and it has signed a four-year agreement with Fincantieri for a humanoid welding robot for shipyards.
