GENE.01 is the humanoid robot platform of Generative Bionics, the Genoa-based spin-off of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, and it was unveiled publicly at AMD Advancing AI 2026 in July 2026 as the company's first robot and its US debut. The company says the machine was built in six months and that its defining idea is Physical AI: the AI system integrates the robot's body, mechanics and intelligence so that it can interpret and respond to the physical world rather than only to abstract data. Its most distinctive hardware feature is full-body tactile sensing through a distributed tactile skin, intended to make physical interaction with people safe and predictable. GENE.01 is deliberately a platform rather than a finished product: both hardware and software are modular, and the company describes it as defining the 'genetics' of its Physical AI, from which it plans task-specific robots for three verticals — inspection and public safety, logistics, and healthcare and pharmaceuticals. The technology descends from more than twenty years of humanoid research at IIT, including the iCub platform, ergoCub and iRonCub, and IIT granted the company an exclusive licence to those core technologies. The first named industrial application is a humanoid welding robot for shipyards under a four-year agreement with Fincantieri.

Application Scenarios

Industrial inspection and public safety; logistics; healthcare and pharmaceutical settings; repetitive, high-risk or high-intensity industrial tasks
