Full torque sensor feedback in all joints, except head, wrists and grippers

TALOS is PAL Robotics' high-performance bipedal humanoid for advanced research and industrial work, launched in 2017. It stands 175 cm and weighs 95 kg, and PAL describes it as a 1.75 metre research partner built around compliance, reactivity and reliability. Its defining feature is full torque control: torque sensor feedback in every joint except the head, wrists and grippers enables powerful sensing and multi-contact motion, so the robot can comply with its environment rather than only track positions. Each arm carries 6 kg fully extended, a payload chosen so the robot can handle heavy industrial tools in settings such as the Factory of the Future, and battery autonomy is 1.5 hours walking or 3 hours standing by. An EtherCAT network runs control loops at 2 kHz, extensible to 5 kHz, which gives the reactivity needed for dynamic whole-body motion. The head and grippers are fully customizable to suit different research programmes. The robot runs Ubuntu LTS with a real-time OS, is developed entirely in ROS, and has an open-source simulation model published for it; PAL also offers premium software including a whole-body controller built in the ros_control framework, navigation, HRI skills and teleoperation. TALOS is used in top research laboratories worldwide.

Application Scenarios

Advanced humanoid research; industrial applications including the Factory of the Future; tasks requiring heavy tool use and multi-contact interaction
